So single speed Dave and I set off to Winchcombe early sunday morning (left mine at 5.30am) in good spirits, as you might expect the traffic was dead and we made it in good time arriving in plenty of time for breakfast and prep time. But  as usual with these events, you stand around and chat rather than warm up and check things over with your kit and bike.

9am and off we went feeling a darn sight better than last years hangovered weekend, i didnt look at the route at all but i knew it would be fairly hilly....... what a shocker the first 5-8 miles was mostly up hill and i need at least 9 miles to warm up! so the first hour was a struggle. By the time we hit the first checkpoint at ten miles i was having second thoughts about the 100 km, but as soon as we got there it was decision time, left 100km or right 50km...... and if i'm honest i was starting to feel better.

100km it is and the route was hilly and cloggy and hard going and i was starting to get into the grove nicely and looking forward to cake stop.

Weather at this point was good, warm ,sunny and a bit of a breeze, so on to cake stop, coffee and bread pudding and a banana, top up of the camelbac and off for the final push.

It was at this point that i noticed Dave was starting to struggle a bit, particularly on the steep granny climbs, i had to get up them, i said to myself, if i've got any chance of getting through transwales! but he kept plugging away until the 45m point and a sign to Winchcombe with only 7 miles and not the 17miles to complete the day................. that sign was too much for Dave and promptly said lets cut it short!!! i'm b.llocksed.

As i'd ridden it last year i wasn't that bothered about finishing and we had still ridden 52miles in total.  Also because of the slight detour we headed down the same downhill bit as last year just before the end, wicked! 40mph and no punctures all day.......... superlight is really good all day and my only gripe is the annoying squeak(not dave) from, i think the pivot bearings.

We were dead lucky with the weather, we had 2 really light showers and was mostly sunny all day. The bikes were caked though so when the heavens opened on the way home i hoped the downpour at 70mph would clean them at least a bit.......... doh no such luck.

Roll on starwars day and the dyfi

There is nearly a hundred riders already, that is amazing, and there is up to 1000 riders in total, I think we need to be careful this year and get booked up sooner rather than later!

I hope you all had a good ride, For me the plot thickens, a really good Army friend of mine was in hospital for a routine op' on his other knee on xmas eve(other one done last year), since then he has been in hospital and has now had 5 operations to try and flush out the infection........ really fit guy.....2.20 cornish marathon and keen cyclist and now told he will never run again, national health service good as ever, as it stands now at 7.30pm he is still under introvenous antibiotics and not sure if he needs another op.

I'm back to work tomorro and not looking forward to it, see you all next week hopefully, Happy new year to all

Blog EntryOut of My DepthDec 8, '07 7:35 AM
for everyone

Morning Troy..........

Lloyd, Dave Palmer, Mike Cowland and then me............(see the pattern emerging). I was hoping for a few more riders to perhaps ride at the back with me, nothing doing

Saturday road ride, i was starting to enjoy this roadie thing, well up until today anyhoo.  The weather was going to dictate the time out riding!!(thank God)

So we rode a fairly quick ride(for me that is) via Earls Barton and Wollaston and back through Irchester and on to Raunds, the weather was miserable and so was I, I was having to push myself a fair bit today and with it being so wet and cold it made it that much worse.  Still as I said to Lloyd I can't get fitter by sitting at home (which is exactly where i wanted to be) and riding with better riders can only improve your fitness or show your lack of..... mine being the latter.

Its on the hills that i mostly came unstuck, whilst driving the pace on the front and not sure how long you can survive, or have the confidence to drop back(male ego time) it then hits you when the incline starts and the "fitties" just ride by asking if your OK, yeah, yeah fine!!

Next weeks ride......... I have got to keep going! It's hard work but it's got to be helping my fitness! also got to keep going as the xmas drinky//eating period is fast approaching and i want to keep on top of it this year.

Please can we have better weather, I don't mind the cold, but wind and rain doesn't help the cause much (sorry JP to mention the weather) I am 42 you know....that's old

Look forward to seeing more of you next week, by that time the alcohol should be out of your systems
